With its easy-care credentials it is no wonder the Nordmann Fir is Britain’s biggest seller. Soft, luxuriant foliage makes it child- and pet-friendly while its shape tends to be quite symmetrical. It has glossy forest-green needles and great needle retention – meaning that it lasts very well.

The U.S.’s number one seller, the hard-to-grow non-drop Fraser is silvery-green with a rich balsam fragrance. Needles are soft and dense, while its slender, pyramidal shape means it fits in neatly where space is limited. A word of warning for perfectionists, Frasers grow with a less regular leader (stem at the top) than other varieties.

The beautiful and elusive Abies Nobilis, deep blue-ish in colour, with chocolate coloured bark and subtle spicy fragrance, is hard to find and tricky to grow, hence its higher price. Be warned, they are heavy and can be a little uneven in shape, but their needle retention is excellent and their lovely layered structure makes them a pleasure to decorate.

A neatly shaped mini tree about 30cms high and grown in a one-litre pot. Great for the dining table or as a festive house decoration. It will survive happily if well cared for.
